So Close in the Million

After having a good week in tourney poker, and continually going deep in over half of the tourney's I entered, I was feeling good about my game on Sunday. I said to Krissy before the Sunday Million started, that I had a really good feeling and I was going to win (obviously half joking, but still feeling really good). Then I got on msn and my buddy Frank "OTT CANADA", said he has a really good feeling about it too, and he thinks I'm going to win (he actually railed me the entire 9 hours of the tourney, so a big thanks to him, Krissy, all the players from PS that I know, along with everyone else from jackseven.ca who gave their support). I really thought I was due for a good finish, and a good run late in a tourney, so I was ready to play to say the least. I will outline the tourney with the key hands that a lot of people on jackseven.ca had questions about.

The tournament started with almost 6 thousand people, and most of the field is made up of donks who sat. in the tourney. My first table was no surprise, terrible. Luckily I caught some hands, getting paid off most of the time (thx to a big bluff i showed early on), and by the second break I was from 10k to 55k, and in the top 100 out of about 4500 players at that point. From there I continued to do most of my chip up's through blind steals, or continuation bets. I was building nicely without much risk. I then went somewhat card dead for a while, and sat tight for a bit. As most of you know, this tournament has an extremely fast structure, that forces you to chip up quickly. This is why you see a lot of marginal hand all in pree flop. For the second half of the tournament it is all pree flop play. So sitting tight and waiting is not much of an option. At this point I made a couple of good re steals that built my stack nicely:

The following hand is pretty much an instincts play. He had been raising blinds a lot, and it felt week to me. I had also been extremely tight for the last while, so he has to give me credit for a good hand. Also my raise would cripple him is he lost, but he would be in fine shape if he folds.

The following hand was a very important one to me, I was starting to get a little low again, and I wasn't able to control the table as they mostly had a bigger stack then me, and were willing to push me around. The raises had been fairly consistent. Muppet 3x's and olsentwin calls. Muppet has been fairly consistently raising, and olsentwin like to see a lot of flops, but will re raise with big hands. I know olsentwin can't call my push, and Muppet has to worry about olsentwin behind him, along with me, who has been playing really tight lately. There is very few hands he can call me with here, and I can increase my stack by almost 50% with what I see as a small risk because of what I said above. And on top of all that it's my favorite hand SUPER JOE!! ;-)

From this point on I chipped up to about 1.2 million without ever showing down. I re raised the button twice from the blinds with KQ, and AK both times he folded. Stole blinds at least once a round, and made a couple continuation bets. My table was extremely week, and I was really hoping it wouldn't break because I was confident I could continue to control it. Unfortunately it broke up shortly after, and I was moved to a tough table, with raises and re raises every hand. The first 3 hands I raised, I was re raised and had to fold. So it was clear that this table was not like the last one, and I was going to have to play a little tighter, and hope some hands came my way.

Then this hand came up which was huge for me. After getting re raised a lot I was getting low again. With about 11bb's, it was time to make a move. 55 is an obv raise here, but when the puck shoves, it's a tough decision. When I look back on the hand now, I think just shoving is a better idea because I don't think I can fold to a re raise because of my image, stack size, and the quick moving blinds. Now that I have 3xed I have almost 1/3 of my stack in the pot. I can still fold, but I will have 8bb's and then I will basically have to shove any 2 in late possition when it folds to me, and after 4 times raising and being re raised and folding, I'm not going to get any respect. Although there is a small chance that I am dominated I think I still have to call and most likely race for all my chips. Thx to the railing, I held.

The following hand is the one everyone has questions about. Folds to the sb and he limps. Obv raise for me, but I really don't want to price him in to a call. I 4x it. As soon as I do it I have a feeling that he is taking the 4x as weakness, and I just knew he was going to shove. I think I can put him on 2 kind of hands here. It's either huge- AA, KK, QQ, limping and hoping I will raise, the chance of this is very very very small. But I think he would most likely raise with all the other pairs, and be happy to take what was all ready in the pot initially. Same goes for hands like ace anything, because if I check, and he doesn't hit the flop, he's in trouble. The other type of hand is any two- huuuuge range. My gut was COMPLETELY telling me that it was any two, and to call here. He had a good amount to try and push me off my hand, and I really felt like he was taking my 4x as weakness. Another huge thing is that there is close to 1.5 million in the pot and it's 900,000 to call. Almost 2/1. If I call and win I will be at about 3 million and huge. If I call and lose I'm at 400, really low, but not out of it at all. If I fold I will be at 1.3, and still in decent shape, but still short stacked. I don't think he is going to have A10-AK here because like I said I don't think he limps with these hands. I don't think he can have 99-JJ here either. The only hand I can have him on here that has me crushed is AA-QQ, and the chances of this are very very small. I strongly believe tourney's are about making plays. At this point in the tourney it's all about picking up blinds, and making re steals. I know this is what my opponent is thinking. I just knew it was a re steal. I asked both Krissy and Myst when I was making my decision (both players who I trust their instincts completely) and they both thought he was making a play. In the end I went with my read and it was a really sick call. I asked a really strong tourney player mig.com what he thought about the hand today, and here is what he had to say:

Now I am sitting in really good shape to make a run at this thing. This hand I think is very basic. I guess I could have told you before the tourney that I would finish 10th-18th since that's where I seem to finish in every fucking tournament I play. But I am happy with the way I played. In the entire tourney I never got it all in behind until the last 2 hands. To go that far without sucking out is pretty good for the Sunday tourney, because I'm pretty sure almost everyone who makes it that far has sucked out more then 5x.

Anyway, it was disappointing to finish there, but I am still happy with how it turned out. The $5.4k is nice, and I have more confidence in my game right now then ever before. I hope I can keep it up.
